Topic: ammeter

I have a 51 F1 pickup. The voltage has been upgraded to 12 volts. The ammeter does not register anything. I am told I have to reverse the polarity by changing the direction of the wire that passes the back of the ammeter. Is this all there is to t? There don't appear to be any electrical posts to connect anything to. Just a red wire passing under a clip on the outside of the ammeter. Do I just unclip it and make the wire run the other way?

Many thanks

Reversing the wire will only cause the needle to travel the opposite direction. The ammeter works by induction, sensing current flow in the wire thru the loops. There is no direct connection. Using a voltmeter, check to see if there is power in the wire, itself. Most non-professional meters can't handle the current. We use a clip-on device for that purpose. If there is voltage on the wire, and you see it vary as the engine speed is raised, or when the headlights are turned on with the engine off, the ammeter is likely OK. If not, the instrument is bad.

If there is voltage in the wire, and I reverse the direction, will the ammeter just throw the needle the other direction? How do I make it work. Should I install a voltage reducer?
Many thanks

My reply was to help you determine if the ammeter works at all. It is one part of the system that doesn't need to be replaced if you go from six to twelve volts. Or, simply put "amps is amps" . Ohm's law says that if you double the voltage, the amount of current, in amps, falls to half the amount for the same amount of power, in Watts. If the ammeter worked before the conversion, it is likely you have a wiring problem.
