Topic: ignition switch replacement

I recently got my 40 pickup back after 23 years, but no ignition key. It has a later model ignition switch in the dash(supposedly from a 49 ford) I was able to remove the bezel and switch from the dash, and get the lock cylinder out of the switch. I took it to a local locksmith and he had the cylinder brand new in the bag, but when I got it home, it was the wrong diameter(too big) to fit in the switch. He doesn't have one that is proper, and the one I removed I damaged the pin that holds it in place(as you need the key to remove it without damaging it). I know that LMC has replacement switch, cylinder, key assembly, but I would really like to keep it as it was. Anybody have a replacement cylinder to fit this?

C&G shows a 1A-11582-A cylinder for '47-'51 cars and '48-'52 pickups. They are titled "good used", and are expensive at about $75. That is about three times the cost of a whole new switch. As the switch isn't original anyway, I'd think that might be the way to go. I'd take the whole switch back to the place that sold you the cylinder and let them figure out how to fix it, since they sold you the part.

If you have a 49 pickup switch you should try to save it.The bezel that holds the switch to the dash is very hard to find and is expensive when you find it. You can buy a replacement switch that will fit if you decide to go that route. You can probably sell the damaged switch with the bezel and spring for 4-5 times the cost of a new switch.
