Topic: 53 F100 Paint

I have a '53 F100 and am looking for some information on how the underside of the various panels were pained at the factory. I assume body color however mine has no evidence of being painted at all. Any help / advice is appreciated.

It would help if you can be specific about which panels you are referring to. Many interior panels, such as window access in doors, were often covered on the back with a material that resembles undercoating to stiffen the panels, and reduce noise. Others were sometimes painted with the semi-gloss black used on the underside and under the hood. It was called "chassis black", and is available from vendors such as Eastwood.

Thanks for your quick reply. Specifically I'm referring to the hood, front and rear fenders bed and cab underbody.

Here's a website that is exclusive to Ford Trucks from '48 to '58. Alot of good knowlege about trucks there.

All the panels you are referring to were painted body color.

Let's say that all of the body panels were supposed to be painted body color, but they were not always painted very well. Under the dash is probably the spot that got the least paint. Rust prevention was not a top priority at Ford in the 50s. It's kind of like cheap chromed parts on a Chinese bike. The chrome protects the parts long enough for the bike to be sold.
