Rear bearing is very noisy on my 42 COE which has external band parking brake on transmission. Can I change rear bearing without tearing down the transmission ??

I looked in the trans manual and it says the bearing is removed from the rear of trans case, so assuming that it might be possible, you would have to support trans, remove the rear cast cover and the bearing is right there, do not know if it a press fit on the output shaft or not-if it is then the shaft and bearing will come out as one piece--sounds a little difficult to do without removing from truck-also if it making that muvch noise then I would replace all the bearing after cleaning the case of the metal from the bearing.

Its been a long time since I did a 4 speed box. The rear bearing slips over the shaft and is positioned by a snap ring on the shaft, The bearing is retained by the rear transmission mount, which is sealed to the case by a gasket. My shop manual says that the bearing must be pressed onto the shaft after placing the slinger on the shaft with the concave side away from the bearing, so it appears the transmission must come out. I agree with Alan that if the bearing is failing, there is probably enough wrong to warrant an overhaul.
