did ford offer or have aluminum intakes on all flathead v8s? whywas some cast iron and others aluminum?

Cars usually had aluminum intakes and trucks usually had cast iron but it depends on the year. What year are we talking about? Charlie Stephens

As Charlie says, you will find both, probably more often on the engines of the 30's. Henry was a pioneer in the use of aluminum, and if he has access to today's alloys, I assume we would have see more applications. I'm attaching a photo of a late 30's intake I bought a while back.

kcorrill: I really can't vouch for trucks, but I believe that all non-commercial 221 cu-in V8's from 1932 to mid-1938 had aluminum intakes, including the 37-40 V8-60's, and all of the Lincoln Zephyr V-12's. I believe that Ford started putting cast-iron intakes on the trucks in the late 30's, but I'm uncertain of the dates. All post 38 passenger cars had cast intakes, as they were probably cheaper to make, and didn't suffer some of the problems associated with the aluminum intakes, wherein the loss of a fan-blade would destroy the generator mounting boss guide bosses due to the sudden unbalance condition. Losing a fan blade was an infrequent but damaging issue in the late 30's as they would occasionally fatigue where they were riveted to the generator mounting hub. Ford solved this problem on the 39 deluxe by mounting the fan on the crank pulley, which meant it only "took-out" the inner fender panels when it exploded.

i asked because i picked up an aluminum intake for a 49-53 (8ba) and i had never seen one before. it is a factory manifold with c8ba and c8rt casting numbers. i was told it may be from canada. ialso have a manifold like superreals pic i belive to be a 36 model This message was edited by kcorrill on 9-14-10 @ 2:44 PM

kcorrill: Super's manifold is a 37-38', as the 36 had a slightly different generator mount height. I've never seen an 8BA factory aluminum manifold, so I'd guess it is not of US manufacture. I'd love to see a picture of it.

It is certainly an 8BA-type manifold, and appears to have a vacuum tap for a hydro-vac or a governor, making it a truck piece. That is the only late aluminum intake of its type I've seen, but with Ford, anything is possible. It could well be Canadian, or aftermarket if you don't find a Ford name or part number on it anywhere. Many old aluminum intakes don't have a part number on them, including the one I showed earlier.

the vac port is just like the one on my 51 truck it runs to the wipers and yes when you give it the gas they stop it has part number c 8ba and c 8rt

My car's a '52 Customline 4dr, Canadian built. It looks to be an aluminum intake, has the C8BA and C8RT numbers.
