I'm doing a frame off restoration on the truck. When I bought it two years ago it had a blue 8BA engine. I read on the Van Pelt site the original engines were red and had 8RT cast into the heads so I'm pretty sure the engine was swapped out of a car at some point. The 8BA heads were cracked so I found a pair of 8RT heads online but from what I can tell the 8RTs look badly pitted near the ends . Is it possible to repair the pitting on the 8RT heads? Who does such work? Or if repair is not an option, what would be the best option for new replacement heads of some kind. I'd like to stay original, but if I can't I can't.

If you want to use original Ford Cast Iron heads. I have a pair of EAB heads and a pair of EAC heads. Both sets of heads have been cleaned and resurfaced by a local machine shop. Let me know if you are interested in obtaining either set. Both sets of heads will function correctly on your engine. The EAB heads will provide a slightly higher compression ratio than the EAC heads.

Thats some pretty severe pitting around the water port on the last photo. Back in the day ,I would say you were out of luck But today I would seek out a quality welder and see what thay say and hopefully if they're confident they can build up the pits, I would seek out the same quality of machine shop to surface the heads. After the repairs I would use a light coating of aviation cement in and around any divits left over .

carcrazy, I appreciate the offer but I would like to stay with 8RT heads to maintain originality if possible.

I bought these 8RT heads from eBay. I should have sent them back right away. Let it be a lesson to me. The guy who sold them should have been embarrassed to even post them for sale. But that's eBay for you. Let the buyer beware.

Hope you find some good 8RT heads for your restoration.
Try posting an ad for them under the "Parts Wanted" section of this website. It is a great way to find parts for our vehicles.

8RT heads weren't really used in larger numbers until 51 and by 52 were prevalent. In the early trucks 8BA is fine. And there's many examples of original later trucks 51 and 52 with 8BA heads. However I have a newly rebuilt and asked for a set of 8RT from the builder, just because I think they're a less common and probably more correct. But with your 50 you should be fine with 8BA heads they're also considered a better head if you want to pick.
