I am trying to identify the gear ratio on my 1945 ½ ton. I have the 42-48 shop manual, and it identifies 3 possible locations stamped on three types of differentials, however none are correct for my differential. I did find one number stamped on the bottom differential casting (I believe it was 11-38) close to the pinion, but doesn’t translate into any of the gear ratio markings designations listed in the shop manual (I don’t know what they mean). Any help would be appreciated….

If you found 11-38 that translates into a 3.45 ratio. I would recheck those numbers. The problem that you encounter by checking for numbers is the rear may have been changed, but the housing is the original.

After vigorous rubbing it appears the numbers are 11-39 not 11-38. would this translate into a 3.54? is this the pinion gear ratio? Is this really the correct location for ratio info? Thanks….

That is the correct location to find the rear end ratio. If you have a 3.54 ratio you are lucky as those are hard to find. Generally pickups have 3.78 or 4.11. The 11 is the number of teeth on the pinion and the 39 is the number of teeth on the ring.
