Are the cast iron and aluminum distributors interchangable on a239 flathead?

I believe that the timing gear cover was different.

So does that mean that they are not interchangeable unless you change the timing cover?
Thank you.

  Distributor P/N-------------------- Front cover P/N

7RA 12127-C --- CAST IRON ---------- 8BA 6059 CAST IRON
8BA 12127 ------CAST IRON ---------- 8BA 6059 CAST IRON
0BA 12127 ------ALUMINUM ----------- 0BA 6059-A ALUMINUM
0BA12127 ------- ALUMINUM ---------- 0BA 6059-C ALUMINUM

The 0BA distributors have a longer shaft than the 7RA and 8BA distributors.

okay, I'm getting somewhere. Is there something external that I can use to determine if I have an OBA cast iron housing or a 7RA cast iron housing?

This site edited my response and removed the formatting so everything ran together. I have added dashes to separate the information. The aluminum covers accommodate the longer shaft.

As Tom brought out, you can use the cast iron distributors with the cast iron front covers. Aluminum distributors with aluminum covers. The 7RA and 8BA parts are cast iron, 0BA parts are aluminum.

To determine if your distributor or front cover are aluminum or cast, just see if a magnet will stick to them. If iron, it will stick.
