Topic: 47 pickup transmission

I am doing a resto-mod on a 47 Ford Pickup. I plan to use the V8 flathead but would like to upgrade to a better manual transmission. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what transmission would fit and where to get an adapter or bellhousing for mounting it?

What are you starting with, 3 or 4 speed? If you are starting with a 4 speed I would just go to the 3 speed which is basically a '39 passenger car transmission with an open drive. It all depends on how much work you want to do. The 4 speed is non synchro while the 3 speed is synchro. While not up to modern standards the 3 speed syncros are good enough for me. They don't have synchro back into first from second. If you have one that is grinding when shifting fix the problem instead or replacing the transmission. The best transmission person I know is Mac VanPelt, http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_home.htm You should add your general location to your profile so people can recommend local experts and parts sources.

If you want to have a 5-Speed All Synchromesh Manual Transmission which includes a built-in overdrive, you can use the Borg-Warner T-5 transmission from a Chevy S-10 pickup. Getting it to fit in your vehicle will entail some work and expense. One source for the adapter bell-housing and required parts is Cornhusker Rod and Custom. You can contact them at either cornhuskerrodandcustom.net or (402)749-1932. For the proper T-5 transmission to use, contact Mac VanPelt at (513)724-9485.

Thank you for your input. I am starting with a 3-speed but am not really interested in sticking with it. I will update my profile as you suggested, thanks.

Thanks for all the information. This sounds exactly like what I would like. I will contact Mac VanPelt and learn a little more.
