Topic: 1950 F1 Pickup GAS TANK

  I am rebuilding a 1950 F1 pickup. The previous owner removed the gas tank from the cab and installed a fuel cell in the bed of the truck (bad idea, overfill destroyed the wood and looked horrible.) Any suggestions on manufacturers of aftermarket gas tanks and ideas on where to locate it without having to cut holes in the fenders/bed for the filler?

  Check with a company called "Tanks".Ph# 320-558-4439. They make a wide variety of tanks and may have what you need.

  If you go with an aftermarket tank, ask if you can use the original sending unit and if it has baffles.

The original sending unit work better with the original gauge than the after market sending unit does and baffles keep the sloshing in the tank to a minimum.

Any suggestions on how to route the exhaust after I install an aftermarket bed?

  I've recently seen tanks advertised, So they are available. If you need a source, I'll look for you. What's the problem w/routing the exhaust? If you buy an exhaust, it'll only fit one way.

  Have your exhaust done by a reputable muffler shop. Don't go to the chain stores like Midas, etc.as they are not good on custom applications. A knowledgeable muffler shop will know exactly how to run the exhaust to clear the tank and any other obstacles. If you leave your tank under the bed(rather than putting it inside the cab as they were stock)you will not be able to use a stock type exhaust system.

  If you don't use the in-cab tank, chances are you will only find the "saddle tank" type. These present a hazard in the event of a collision. We use mostly plastic tanks now. They are less expensive, and never rust, even in the presence of the "new" gas. Tom's direction on exhaust systems is right on. Our local shop just constructed a 3" stainless system for a customer's Camaro, and it is simply too beautiful to hide under the car. Most franchise shops only use templates from a book, and have problems with custom set ups.
