Topic: WHAT BATTERY TO USE

shoebox    -- 08-07-2016 @ 7:20 AM
For my 39 Merc I purchased a 6v Optima and a case that does a nice job of looking like an old battery for it. Upon installation I find it too tall to use the original hold down hardware, BUMMER! What are any of you 39 guys using for a correct size battery?

Thanks

The battery case you have must be cut out on the bottom to allow more room for the Optima, a thick battery pad also with a cutout, and a modification of the hold down hardware to accommodate the additional height. Your original battery was a 2LF, into which an Optima no longer fits without those modifications.

PS~ I and other pre-war guys initially passed over your question due to your user name and no year car mentioned in the title!

  Hey Ford38V8,
Thanks for the input, not sure at this point if I'm going to stay with the Optima or not, and yes I messed up with my Topic Title wording.

The Optima is actually the best choice for a 6 volt battery. The 2LF battery is no longer made by any manufacturer, so any and all batteries would be taller than the original battery for your car. The Optima is a GEL Cell battery, which will not outgas to destroy paint, and has 800 cold cranking amps, the highest output available. They should pay me to say this stuff, but they don't need me!
