Were rear fender shields ever offered by Ford for the 39 or 40 Mercurys ? I have a pair exactly the same shape as the 38/39 Fords but they are only about 2/3rds the size. christompkins@xtra.co.nz

Chris, The rear fender wheel openings on he 39 Mercury is unique to that year. Th 1940 Mercury used another unique wheel opening. As far as I can tell, Ford did not offer fender shields for either model. The smaller wheel opening was meant to be a styling change so that shields were not needed. Tom
