I am having my 39 Mercury Steering Wheel re-finished however due to the condition of the wheel I would like to find one in better condition. Finding one is a challenge. Will the 40 Ford Deluxe Wheel fit? Can I use my original Horn Button and light switch with a 40 Ford Deluxe Wheel? Thanks

The 40 Ford wheel will fit the shaft but you will not be unable to use the light switch and horn button from the 39 Mercury. On the 40 Mercury, the steering wheel lock will not work with the Ford steering wheel. The 39 Merc may have the same condition.

Most steering wheels can be rebuilt. If you just have cracks in the wheel, you can grid them out in an inverted V shape, drill a couple of 1/8" holes in the sides of surrounding material and fill the crack with PC-& Epoxy. Make sure that the holes get filled first and fill the crack with epoxy before the filling cures. The holes will act as an anchor, tying the sides of the crack together, so that a new crack does not develop later.

I am told that Lauren Matley in WA does an excellant job of restoring the wheels, if you do n ot want to try doing it yourself.
