Topic: Turn signals

I saw a 47 Merc. convertible at a car show with turn signals in the steering column. I checked my 47 Merc. Coupe and it has the knock out at the top of the column. Was there turn signals as an option on my car? If so where do I find info on this set-up or a kit to install.

Turn signals became an option on the Mercury in 1942. They also became an option on the Ford and Lincoln Zephyr in 1942.

I doubt that you will be able to find a kit to install them after almost 70 years, as they were not a popular accessory.

The 1939 through 1948 Chassis Parts catalog lists the parts used in the kit. The wiring, flasher socket and flasher can be found at some of the vendors that sell wiring harnesses. The cam, lever, switch and related parts will be difficult to find.

Thanks Tom for the info, I talked to the fellow with the turn signals, it seems he modified an integral turn signal from a 51 Ford as they were more common. Seems he had to modify the plate under the steering wheel to fit the 47. At least now knowing that they were an option I'll keep my eyes open at the swap meets. Thanks again.
