Topic: Stock 51 Mercury-weak winshield wipers

My car is equipped with a single action fuel pump. The windshield wiper action is very weak and gets worse under minor acceleration and stops altogether momentarily with hard acceleration.

Question : would a double action fuel pump correct this ? The rubber line is new from the FP to the wiper mtr assembly and the assembly has been oiled for free movement.

Any suggestions would be most helpful in correcting this problem. Thanks ....Tracker

I doubt that the double action pump will make enough difference with your symptoms.

Try lubricating the vacuum motor with a little light oil.

Remove the motor, take off the small cover and put a drop of oil on the mechanism. Replace the cover and put a couple of drops of oil in the vacuum connection and operate the motor back and forth about 50 times to distribute the oil.

Reinstall the motor and lubricate all of the pivots in the linkage. Remove the wiper arms and drive with the wiper motor turned on until you hear the motor speed up. This may take a couple of trips. Re-install the wiper arms and blades.

This should improve the wiper action, but will not cure the problem. If it does not improve the wiper action, you will have to send your wiper motor in for repair.

Here is another method to lubricate the motor:

One of the mysteries is why many American manufacturers did't go to electric wipers years before they did. they are far suoerior to vacuum wipers and are not that hi-tech. any ideas?

  Thanks Tom

I notice the Trico illustration states it is for a Model T...mine looks a lot like that one but not exact..will try again to lubricate it internally..if that does not work I will try to find a 6 volt wiper mtr ...

While your wipers won't work as well as electric wipers would, you can install a dual action fuel and vacuum pump to improve their function. Dual action fuel pumps are available for your application from MAC's.
