I have a 1946 Merc Convertible with an odd noise from the gearbox when second gear is engaged only . Once I put my foot on the clutch the noise disappears. It is a clatter sound. First and third gear are OK. Can anyone throw some light on this expensive sounding problem. many thanks Mike.

That usually means a bearing problem, likely the two roller bearings inside the cluster gear. Check to see that the gear oil level is correct. Old Fords (and Mercs) leak oil down the torque tube, and need frequent checking. It is probable the transmission will have to come and be disassembled. How expensive will be determined by what is found. The only sure thing is that the problem will get worse, and more expensive, if continued to be run without repair.

Thanks for the reply Supereal we have taken the gearbox out and discovered that a chip of the tooth from the reverse gear has broken off and must have got caught in the second gear cog and chipped two teeth off that gear.
Oh well its only money and they are still printing it!!!

If the cluster gear is undamaged, you are in luck. That part is usually very expensive. While they look the same, there are differences. If you need one, be sure you get the correct part. Broken teeth are often the result of a worn blocker in the shifter that allows two gears to be meshed at once. If the teeth are chipped, but not missing, it may be possible to file or grind the area to smooth it enough to use it.
