Topic: Hydro-lectric problems

I have a 1946 Ford Mercury Cabroliet which has the original Hydro-lectric hydraulic pump attached to the firewall. It has developed a leak when raising the top only which I could not see where it was leaking so after replacing all fitting and hoses from the control valve to the pump I discovered a hole in the caseing which the reservoir attaches to beside the inlet connection fitting which appears to be a small factory hole and this is where the brake fluid is leaking from. What purpose does this hole serve and why would it be leaking. Does this hole vent the reservoir to the atmosphere? When I say leaking it is a serious leak which would empty the fluid reservoir after raising the top a couple of times. Apart from this problem the hydraulic system worked well until this problem arose. Thanks Mike.
