Topic: 39 Merc Headlight gremlin

While re-installing the headlights on my 39 Mercury I found that the park lights seem to work when the switch is rotated left. When I rotate the headlight switch to the right, only the passenger side headlight bulb works. Pushing the dimmer switch does not make a difference. I installed a new socket and bulb on the driver's side and got the same result. Not sure now if I need to trouble shoot the headlight switch, the dimmer switch, or wiring. Anyone experienced this problem? If it is the headlight switch, any advice on how to remove it. Thanks Steve

The wiring for the headlights comes from the dimmer switch to the left light harness on a black wire with a red tracer for the low beam. the light harness has a spot where the left lights plug in and another spot for the right lights.

Your problem seems to be in the wiring or in the harness. You can try switching the wires at the junction point on the left side of the radiator.

Hi Tom, Many thanks. I will check it out tonight after work and later this evening when I get some time to go to the garage. It makes sense that the wiring is the problem since the switch works for the passenger side lights, and it looks as if the horn is also tied in to this junction box, and it works. I will check wires and connections with the Voltmeter also. I am learning as I go with the Mercury. I did not know the junction box existed. I will let you know how it works out. Steve

Steve, there is no junction box, just a few wires coming out of the loom.
