Topic: 1941 Mercury

I recently acquired a '41 Merc convertible. There are no valance panels between the body and the bumpers. Can anyone tell me if there are supposed to be panels on this car and if not will '42-'48 Ford panels work for me? If I use the '48 panels will I need to change the bumpers too? Right now the car has some after market aluminum bumpers that look like 1937 DeSoto parts.
Thanks for any help! Karl.

Congratulations on your recent acquisition. The 41 Mercury is a very pretty car. It is very different from the 1940 or 1942 models and although it shares the body with the 41 Ford, very few part interchange. I suggest that you find a 1939-1948 Mercury Chassis Parts Catalog and any sales literature that shows body details to help you maintain your car and help you choose any trim items that you would like to change.

The rear gravel deflector (sheet metal piece on top of the bumper arms between the bumper and the body) was an accessory in 1941. There was no such piece for the front bumper in 1941.

The 42, 46-48 bumpers are completely different from the 41 bumper.

Here is a link to some nice photos of a 41 Mercury convertible. It has the correct bumpers.

I guess I didn't make myself clear or give enough info.
Since '41 Mercs' are so hard to find parts for I was wondering if I can use '42-'48 bumpers and /or filler panels on my '41 Merc? I don't need the car to be concourse, just want it to look good.
Thanks for any input.

You could probably make the 42-48 bumpers fit, but IMHO they would look very awkward on the 41 body, due to the shape of the fenders and grill. The 41 Ford bumpers would look better to me. The filler panels would be harder to make fit and look good.

Did you try the Bumper Boyz for the 41 Merc bumpers. Try placing a want ad on this site and the Ford Barn.

If you replace the bumpers, it is likely that the supporting irons will have to replaced, as well. I have a hard time understanding why the "stone deflectors" (the pan between the bumper and the body) are so very expensive. The last NOS one I bought was over $300! Even the repros are about $175 for the front, and $250 for the rear.

Hi buford8, I hope you enjoy your '41Mercury. I just finished my wife's '41 convertible. While all the 19-A parts are scarce, I was amazed that I was able to find as many NOS parts as I did. I have some contacts for parts. The non original bumpers that really look good on these cars are the Lincoln front bumpers with the double bar center section. I have a friend that has one on a '40 Mercury convertible. If I can help you, just let me know. Robert E.
