How hard is it to install a 49 Merc motor into a 46 Merc?

You will need 8RT water pumps for the front mounts, and an adaptor for the back of the engine. They are available as a truck part to match the block to the early transmission. The rest is a matter of hooking up linkage and wiring.

That sounds easy enough. Thanks for the info.

You may also have to "re-flog" the crankcase vent draft pipe to clear the front crossmember.

You will probably need the truck oil pan with the rear sump to clear the tie rod and drag link.

You may also have some fan issues. The fan needs to be no more than 3/4" from the radiator in order to have proper air flow at idle.

The easiest exchange is using another 42-48 engine.

If you are using a real '49 Merc engine , you just need to change to 8rt water pumps, use the '46 exhaust manifolds & fuss with the breather pipe. Bell housing , clutch, fan, oil pan fits as is, couldn't be any easier.
