Hood on my '48 Merc wouldn't stay open so replaced the hood support springs that all the "Ford" vendors sell. New ones barely held the hood open. Talking to C&G people confirmed there being a problem because the Merc hood is heavier and or longer. Has anyone figured out a way to deal with this problem? Carl

It is likely that the pivots on the hood linkage are badly worn, and have lost tension on the springs. Those springs are common to both brands, and should hold the hood if the special shoulder bolts and their mountings are in reasonable condition. The geometry of the linkage supports the hood itself, aided by the springs. Also be sure none of the linkage bars are bent, or otherwise deformed.

Supereal is correct. The Ford and Mercury hood support arms carry the same part number. I don't know if the reproduction support arms will keep your hood open as I used NOS ones on my 40, the reproduction ones were not available in the 1970's. I would try the Drake reproductions as his quality is usually better than Vintique. C&G list the support arms as P/N 91A-16782/3. Tom

I know C&G lists replacement arm/supports as 91A-16782/3, as Tom has noted, but I didn't find them in the Drake catalog. We don't buy much from Drake because they seem to backorder almost everything. I've used his trunk lid arms, which are first class parts.
