HI I wonder if a 1939 1940 MERCURY EXPERT,can HELP ME ? these front shocks came out of a collection that a person was restoring a 1940 MERCURY, I never saw these before and was wondering were they came from, original ? the mounting holes are the same as FORD the links have the part number 99A-18055, the only numbers on the shocks are 2108 A and 6-D-1 and that is on the top on a steel plate, these are free and move, what are they worth? I'm no Merc expert, but my guess is those shocks are a Delco replacement. Delco was a GM supplier, but they made replacement shocks for a lot of other cars.

I'd guess along with Tom on that. Those are not Ford shocks. Looks like a blacksmith had a hand in making the shock arms, too. Alan

HI I cleaned these shocks and found DELCO and made in DAYTON made in USA, I have another discussion in the FORD FORUM.,and one person said these were better than the FORD shocks of that time, in that they worked better and gave a better ride,the MERCURYS were bigger and heavier than the FORD CAR,so maybe that's why they made these shocks, the arms are made out of flatstock steel,I do not think a blacksmith made these,looks factory to me, Also looks like it has dual pistons, or some sort dual chambers these do move and are not frozen so should be able to be rebuilt, thanks for you input,if you have any thing to add I will check back later thanks 37RAGTOPMAN

According to the parts catalogs from 1939 and 1940, the 1939 Mercury used P/N 91A-180045-A and 91A-180046-A for the front shocks and 99A- 18080-B and 99A-18081-B for the rear shocks. The 1940 cars used shocks with the 01A prefix an a B suffix in the front and a 09A prefix in the rear. When I had my shocks rebuilt, the re-builder told me that the cross reference book showed that the difference between the Ford and Mercury was in the arm. The link that you have was only used on the 1939 Mercury with the late model frame spacer and then used on the 1940-41 cars with the redesigned stabilizer bar. I agree with Tom and Alan that the Delco shock was an aftermarket replacement. All of the genuine Ford shocks that I have seen have cast iron arms.
