Did the 1939 Mercs come equiped with anti chatter rods? A 83 yr. old friend is having trouble with clutch chatter. This was a fresh clutch,, pressure plate, etc that was installed several months ago.It has a 10inch clutch plate and a #59 truck block.we just removed the transmission again. There doesn't seem to be a concave place on the frame where chatter rods would be mounted. If it does have chatter rods do they mount differently than they do on a 39 ford ?

The 39 and 40 Mercury chatter rods go from the back of the block to the front cross-member. They are a different length than the Ford rods and do not work any better.

Clutch chatter can be caused by mis-alignment of the release fingers on the pressure plate, warped pressure plate cover, weak or loose motor mounts, flywheel not true and operator error.

If you still have the transmission out, place a straight edge across the cover and measure the distance to the release fingers, they should be about 15/16" and be withing 1/32" of each other. If this adjustment is out of specs, the pressure plate cover may have been warped during installation. The proper way to install the pressure plate is to block the release fingers to remove pressure on the clutch disc while tightening the cover bolts.

Check the front and rear motor mounts. The bolts should be tight enough to just cause a slight bulge in the rubber hockey puck.

Another thing that will cause or contribute to clutch chatter is the condition of the rear shock absorbers and their links. If these links are worn out the vehicle will have extreme clutch chatter especially in reverse.

Thank you for your advise, my friend has finished rebuilding the transmission and will be re-installing it shortly. Macs provided him with another dics and press. plate(no charge)He also had the flywheel turned. I will pass on your suggestions.
