Topic: Question about '49 - '51 Mercury Woody

  Hi,

I'm going to build a scale model in 1/25 of a '49 - '51 Mercury Woody. Beside the differences of grilles and dash board i found different designs of the rear door. Oncee as asteel door with wooden inserts and spare tire. The other one was made out of wood and a spare tire..
I saw pictures of '49/'50 model year with a wooden door, but from the '51 model year I saw both kind of doors.
Which kind of door are correct for the three different model years?

Thanks for your help

Good luck with your model. The doors are also different from a Ford. They follow the bludge of the front fender.
As they were fazing out the woodie wagon, you could get a new 1951 wagon with metal or wood panel inserts. They were just using up the parts they had left. In mid 1950 the tailgate changed over to steel with woodgrained vinyl applied. That is not to say that near the final builds, there wasnt a 1951 created with a wooden tailgate. The numbers and documentation is a little fuzzy. So, I would say, if you were doing a 1949 - the tailgate would be wood. If you were doing a 1950 - the tailgate could be wood or metal. And if doing a 1951 - I would say that there were more metal tailgates than wood.

Interesting, there is a story out there that when the plant actually closed, employees were offered the remaining doors, panels, tailgates etc for free. Many pieces were used to heat the homes of those up in Iron Mountain.

Hope this helps.
