  I have a mercury engine with the number & letter des.8cm instead of 9cm on the heads. is this a late 48 model engine? it has a side dist. i have not been able to find this designation anywhere. thanks

  All 1949 Mercury heads are marked 8CM, just as the 1949 Ford V8 heads are 8BA, and 1949 Lincoln heads are 8EL. Ford assigned the "8" part numbers, hoping to have all of these cars ready for the beginning of the 1948 model year. The cars actually came out so late that they all ended up being the 1949 models.
