  Hi,
I am changing the throwout brg on my 40 Merc twodor,I was looking on the trans for #s.
I found a number --- 6D 7189---- stamped into the top flange of the trans housing, just above the inspection port.
I tried looking up this number, on the "Ford Flathead Engine" site, but the numbers listed there do not come close.
Can anyone shed some light on the number and were do I look for future referance.
Thxs

The correct clutch release bearing for your car is 78-7580, available from C&G (800/266-0470) for about thirty bucks. It is a good idea to replace the pilot bearing, B-7600, and the clutch disc, CD-870 (10") while you have it apart, and to clean the flywheel and pressure plate surface with a Scptchbrite pad. An excellent source of parts and info for your car is in the C&G catalog. Ask for a copy with your order.

Normally there would have been a prefix like 99 or 09 with the rest of the serial number after that. In your case I suspect the vehicle (or at very least the gearbox itself) is a Canadian model. They used that type of numbering system. I do not have the breakdowns on the Canadian numbers, so I cannot advise you if your number fits that suggestion.

Very interesting, as I have a letter from the original owner saying it was originally purchased in the US.
Maybe the trans was changed at some time. The motor is a 48 to 53 truck motor with an 11" clutch. Will look closer at the number.
Thxs for the info
