Topic: 1939 Mercury headlamp swictch?

cwray    -- 04-05-2011 @ 7:36 PM
I took my steering column apart today and began to evaluate things I need in this area. It appears after looking at the old wiring harness removed from dash area a push/pull headlamp switch was installed in the dash. After searching parts catalouge it seems my 39 Merc. has a headlamp switch at the base of the column. Is the column mount correct and dash mount must have been added in times past? The dash mount switch doesn't seem to be spliced into the harness, what other reason would a three position push/pull switch be used for other than off/park/headlamps? Also, where does the horn relay ground wire attach to the column at? Some more detailed and exploded views of column and column components would help. Haven't had much luck locating a 39 Merc. Body service manual they seem to mostly deal with mechanical assembly and repair. Your replies and assistance is helpful and appreciated.

Ford did not publish a service manual for the 1939 cars. Service letters, which have been reprinted, are the closest thing to a service manual. The parts catalogs are very useful, especially if you can find originals.

Van Pelt's website contains wiring diagrams and schematics for you car as well as other service information.

http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_home.htm

The headlights are controlled by the switch at the bottom of the column in the 39 Mercury.

The horn relay ground wire goes to the switch at the bottom of the column and is grounded by the horn button rod.

The 38-39 Chassis parts manual has a good view of the steering column. If the reprint 38-41 doesn't have a good view, I will scan it for you and send it in a private message so you can print it out.

I would appreciate it if you would post larger photos. The current photos are way to small top see any details and when I blow them up, they just become cubes. 1024 pixels wide load fast and give adequate detail.

Thanks for all your helpful information. I'll try to post larger photo to this reply, I think I got the size adjusted. Charlie

It still should be bigger. Try posting a photo that is 10 inches wide.

I appreciate all you guys advise and support. The car is about as much diassembled as it could be. Most of the parts and pieces I got with the project are either new or restored. My past experience with antiques and classics have been in the streetrods area, I did own a 40 ford tudor sedan 25 years ago, but it was a long way from a original car. I,m going to need lots of advise restoring this one like Henry built it, I guess, I should say like Edsel built it. Thanks again for all the helpful advise. Going to try to post better photos.

  Hi Charlie,

You finally got the size large enough to see the car, now you have to take gravity into consideration so all of your tools do not fall to the bottom of the screen.

You have a great start on a fine restoration. There are not many 39 Mercurys left, so it is a pleasure to help get one back on the road.
