I just registered on this site because I just purchased a new (to me) 1939 mercury sedan. Lots of new and restored parts, but completely disassembled. I,m going to need lots of advise. My first question is where does the radio reciever mount (not the tuner, but the reciever). Does it mount under dash, in the luggage compartment, where does it locate?? Any help or advise where to get body literature would help. Also needing a 99a series flattie to make the car complete with numbers matching. Thanks, Charlie! Welcome to the Forum, Charlie and congratulations on your purchase of the first year Mercury. The receiver for the 39 Mercury and Ford is a one piece item and it mounts behind the dash. The grille in the center of the dash is for the speaker and there should be a removable face plate for the dials. If you do not belong to the Early Ford V-8 Club, I would suggest that you join. As a member you will get a great magazine that has pictures and information on all Ford and Mercury automobiles from 1932 - 1953. You will also get a list of Regional Groups in the Roster as well as other members that have 1939 Mercurys. You do not have to be a member to get assistance on this site. The 1939 / 1940 Body parts catalog has been reproduced and is available from many vendors listed on this site. You should also purchase a chassis parts catalog. The 38 - 39 Ford book is available on this site. It is devoted to the Ford cars, but a lot of the information will apply to the Mercury as well. The 39 Mercury body and chassis are completely different from the Ford, but most of the mechanical parts will interchange and the interiors are similar enough so that will give you a general idea of how to put your car together. The 39-40 239 cu in motors are getting harder to find. You can advertise for one on this site's classified section or on the Ford Barn Classifieds. If you become a member of the Early Ford V-8 Club, you will get one free ad a year in the V-8 Times. Tom

The 1938-39-40-41 Chassis Parts and Price List book published by Ford was absolutely indispensable while restoring my '39. This Forum is also invaluable. Good luck. The great challenge is to get the Mercury-unique parts; they are available but it can take a long time to find them. Be patient also.

Charlie: Your attachment was not of a '39 Mercury. As for "numbers matching", that isn't a consideration for Ford built vehicles, for the most part. Some Mercury specific parts are given separate prefixes, but the engines bear only the production serial number, for the most part. If you have cylinder heads that show a Mercury designation, they can be placed on a 24 stud Ford block. The biggest hurdle in restoring a Mercury, particularly an early one, is the body parts, trim, etc. There are members, such as TomO, that specialize in Mercs who can furnish the advice you need, a good reason to join our Club.

Thanks for all the helpful information on places to find literature. I joined the EFV-8 club. I'd really like to have a period correct body service manual. I was a Ford dealership technician for almost 30 years until 2006 and now own a independent repair shop as well as a classic car restoration shop, my restoration shop can be found at RinggoldAutoRestorations.com. We do alot of streetrod upgrades and builds, but this is my first Mercury original restoration and this is such a good start with a original, I want to leave it that way. I believe I got 90% of what I need to make the build already, it's just in peices. You guys that have already been there with your 39 and 40s will have to be my invaluable advisors and will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the support. I attached a accurate picture of what I'm starting with. My wife and I will be keeping this one.
