Has anyone heard of a 1950 Mercury that came from the factory with an auomatic transmission?

I believe that '51 was the first year for the Merc-O-Matic. Prior to that time, overdrive was the optional choice. As with all things Ford, there can be anomalies, and if there were any '50 models with the automatic, they would have been made very late in the model year. I had a '50 with 3 speed and OD. It was a great car, but I've never seen one with Merc-O-Matic. I might add that Lincoln did have an automatic, but it was the GM Hydra-Matic, rather than a Ford design, in the early years.

I saw one a few years ago at the James Dean Run. It was stone stock and had the 51-style automatic column and large brake pedal. I think it had the Mercomatic emblem as well. I remember thinking that it must have been a very late 1950/very early Mercomatic car.
