I am currently rebuilding a engine for a 1953 ford pick up. I have all parts and engine was bored out .060 I want to install adjustable lifters in it and have heard that they work good and bad. This engine is not the original and I believe it is from the middle 40s to 53. The other block was cracked on both lower sides from freezing. I think the adjustable lifters would be a good idea but I am not sure. this truck would be only driven on occasion in the summer months. Any advice on this issue would be most welcome..This truck is not mine but I am doing it for a friend. I am a mechanic and have owned flatheads when I was a kid but have never rebuilt one. Thanks again.

We use adjustable lifters and straight stem vales on all of our flathead rebuilds without problems. We drill a small hole in the lifter boss for the type used, and it makes adjustment easier. We just put an Allen wrench thru the hole to hold the lifter while we adjust it. Some lifters come with a special wrench, but they can be tricky to use. If you can find self lockers, they are much easier to set. Early lifters were sometimes a problem, but the new ones are reliable. Most don't plan on building a high revving engine where the heavier weight might cause some valve "float".

I used the adjustable lifters. I can't imagine adjusting the valves the old fashioned way. The wrenches they supply are a bit tricky, but they will work if you can figure them out.
