Topic: Need 1940 Mercury flathead V8

I need a rebuildable 1940 Mercury flathead V8 for a restoration project. It has to be a Mercury block; a Ford won't do. Any leads appreciated!
Thanks,
Chris

Chris, Mercury used Ford truck engines in their cars. The '39, '40, & '41 cars all used the same truck engines. Eric Brown has a '39 truck engine listed in the classified section on this forum.
Also, I have a friend that has a '40 fordor he is going to sell with an original, untouched engine. I tried to buy just the engine, but naturally, he wants to sell the car complete. What body style are you working on? I have photographs of this engine. Robert E.

  Hi Robert,
The vehicle I am working on is a 1940 Ford Marmon Herrington deluxe 4 door sedan. The engine has been replaced with a later flathead and I want to reinstall the correct engine. I am glad to know Mercurys used Ford truck engines. I have a 1940 Mercury V8 in another vehicle and it has a "T" cast on the heads and "99T" stamped on the right front top deck. Can I assume the "T" means truck? Does the truck engine have the circular center water passage? Many Thanks!
Chris

Chris, That is one rare car you are working on. I was at a restoration shop with a very knowlegable Mercury man and we saw a flathead with the 99T, and he said, that's a Mercury engine. I would also like to know if the "T" means truck, or engines that were to be used in Mercury cars. Maybe an expert will jump in here and let us know. I beleive these truck engines would have the circular water passages in the center.
