fits mec -39 hood mouldings on a 40merc ? and have someone body mouldings to a merc 40 convertible fore sale

TomO    -- 09-22-2010 @ 8:31 AM
The 39 Mercury hood moldings will fit on a 1940 Mercury, but they are a different shape.

The different moldings show up on E-Bay occasionally. The door and rear quarter moldings are difficult to find and are expensive when auctioned off. The hood moldings show up more often.

You can place a want ad on this site in the Classified section and also on the FordBarn.com web site.

sorry about this mistake, this was for a 1939 FORD DELUXE, not a 1939 MERCURY

the for sale on this web site in the parts forsale is a beautiful 1939 deluxe hood and is complete, with all moulding's plus release handle and hood trim,
if you think about it might a cheaper way to go use what you need and sell the rest,
hope this helps 37RAGTOPMAN an KEEP on FORDIN,,,!!!

The Ford parts numbering system consists of a central "group" number, which is the same for all parts of its kind, preceded by a number and letter that tells you the year range, and a suffix number that lays out the various differences within the subject as an alphabetical indicator (A,B,C, etc). It is not unusual to find "running changes" which dictate different trims, etc, in the same year and model. This may sound confusing, but compared to other makes, it is much simpler to decode. Some vendors omit the full designation, causing confusion when ordering.

The correct moldings will start with the 09A prefix. The correct hood moldings have the P/N 09A-16722 and 09A-16723.

If you need the P/N for other moldings, I will get them for you.

Where are you located?

I have not had to buy moldings in over 25 years, so I do not have a good idea of the market price. They look very restorable. The dent that he has a closeup of is going to take a lot of work to make the moldings look right and there is quite a bit of corosion on one of the pieces with deep pits.

The top on the convertible is operated by vacuum from the engine. There are two cylinders behind the back seat that operate the top. See the attached drawing.

I have a 40 Mercury Coupe and my 8 year old Granddaughter loves it and enjoys riding in it and going to car shows in it.

Most, if not all, the Ford and Mercury trim is made from stainless steel, and shouldn't show signs of corrosion. Any pits would be the result of damage from road debris. Genuine Ford trim can be restored by dinging out the pits and filing the surface smooth, then polishing it. Some repro trim is not stainless, and will rust. We polish trim with wheels and rouge from Eastwood. Turning the wheels in a drill press makes the job easier, we found, but wear hand and eye protection.

I suggest you ask a specialist. One such is Sanders Reproduction Glass. Their web site is www.sandersreproglass.com. They use original patterns to produce old car glass. There are some differences in size and thickness between models that can seriously affect installation.

TomO    -- 11-15-2010 @ 7:57 AM
All of the 40 Mercury glass is different from the Ford glass except the rear convertible top glass. If you have the frames for the glass, your best bet is to have a local glass shop measure and cut the glass for you. After polishing the edges, seal them with black semi-gloss paint. Your next best is to have Sanders provide you with the glass. Shipping is going to be very expensive.

The 1940 Mercury convertible is a very hard car to restore, because very few parts will interchange with the Ford or later Mercury's. There were only 9,212 produced and the survival rate was very low due to the lack of parts and the famous tin worm.

The door and quarter moldings interchange with the 40 Sedan Coupe, the hood and cowl moldings interchange with all other 40 Mercury body styles.

The door glass and frames are unique to the the convertible. The trim around the windshield only interchanges with the more rare 4 door convertible.

I am sorry that you got scammed on your trim parts. It is very difficult buying parts from different countries. You may have to pay more for parts on E-Bay, but you can have the safety of Pay Pal. There are a couple of vendors that advertise in Hemmings Motor news that are reliable and may have parts for your car. Glen Marion and Lowell Kimball are 2 that I have dealt with in the past and have been very honest in the description of the parts and the parts were priced slightly above the swap meet prices.

Every year some people from your country come over for the Turlock swap meet and the Hershey swap meet. You might see if one of them will look for your parts.
