Topic: 53 Merc steering gear question

I've had a 53 Merc wagon for 27 years, now with 69K original miles--over the years the steering gear has developed a slight kink or vague "hump" that needs to be overcome as the wheel is first turned left or right. My car is equipped with power steering; the linkage has been checked for binding. I'm wondering if this is a common problem on high-mileage Mercs and Fords 52-54, what may be required to correct it, who might rebuild steering boxes and what that would entail etc. Also--is the 53 Ford box and steering assembly the same as the Merc?

I believe that the Mercury and Ford gear boxes are different. The Chassis Parts Catalog for the 1949-1953 give a prefix of MA for the housing. I don't know of any parts or wear in the steering box that would cause your problem.

I think your problem may be in the control valve for your power steering. Over the years, varnish may have accumulated in the spool valve cylinder making it harder for it to move off center. Another cause could be a plugged or dirty filter in the power steering reservoir, reducing the pressure going to the control valve. My first try at a fix would be to flush the system and replace the filter in the pump reservoir. If that did not fix it, I would remove and clean the control valve.
