Is there a trick to removing wheel skirts?

Yes, what kind of car do you have?

  It’s a 1947 Mercury 79M coupe.

Advice is much appreciated, as I’ve never had them off, and the tire has a slow leak that is not going away.

Use a small shop mirror and a flashlight to look up inside the area between the tire and the skirt to see what the release member looks like. The handle(s) to release the skirt will either be a flat bar or a round heavy wire-like item. Once located, determine in which direction to move the item to remove the skirt.

Thanks, I just don’t want to drop it!

Put a folded up blanket on the ground under the skirt before attempting to remove it. This will protect the skirt from being damaged while you remove it.
