have a 50 merc and need to change gera oils. Original shop manual recommends to use "Mild-EP" for gearbox and "Hypoid" for the diff. How does this translate to todays standards? Does API-GL4 correspond to "Mild-EP" and API-GL5 to "Hypoid" or is it needed to go one level lower for each?

Here is a link to a site that explains the API ratings for gear oil. http://www.upmpg.com/drivetrains.htm I would use an API 4 gear oil in both the trans and differential. Tom

|
Most, if not all, present day gear oils are the "high pressure" type, and suitable for your application. Unless we are dealing with a "positraction" differential, we use a name brand 80-90 oil. For old cars, we also stock 140 to help contain the lube when the lighter grade is more likely to leak.
