We are having Transmission problems. Not Shifting smoothly. We have drained the trans fluid and replace some bushings. Still Grinds and is hard to go shift into gear. Any Ideas on what it may be. Do we need to pull it and go threw it or does someone have any other ideas?

Welcome to the forum, WhtOwl. Before you tear into the transmission, check your linkage. The column shifter may be in need of attention that hopefully may save your day!

Think the linkage has Ben adjusted. Will recheck to make sure.

Very nice car. You don't see many Yosemite Green Mercurys

Did you try adjusting the clutch free play? It should be adjusted so that the pedal moves about 1 1/4" before contacting the throw out bearing. The measurement is taken between the pedal and the floorboard.

If it happens in all gears, check the pedal bushings and the transmission cross shaft bushings for play. Also check the clutch release equalizer for wear in the fork.

If the transmission cross shaft bushings are worn, then you will need to pull the transmission to rep[lace them and the shaft. I would go through the transmission and the pedal bushings while I had the transmission out.

If you remove the pressure plate, put 1/4" blocks between the cover and the release arms before installing a new or rebuilt unit. I recommend having yours rebuilt. Check with the closest Regional Group for a recommendation of where to have your rebuilt.
