'39 Merc sedan: rear door windows wobble back and forth and do not roll up smoothly. Previous post suggested shims to the channels. I did that and the tolerance is now almost nil. The regulator works well, teeth are good etc. When I roll the window up it tilts (towards the rear) and binds. Since the window glass is exact cut as original that shouldn't be the problem. I reversed the glass (front to back) since the sides are not mirror images; that helped a very little bit. Any additional comments and suggestions would be appreciated. What am I missing?

Try loosening the screws that hold the regulator, move the regulator so that the top of the glass is contacting the top of the door evenly and then tighten the regulator screws. The only other suggestion that I have is to try shifting the channel on the glass slightly to the rear. Make sure that the channel groove is well greased with a heavy wax type grease such as Door Ease. The wax type greases do not capture as much dirt and grit as the white lubricants. Tom

so far, no solution to the problem I'm at a stage where I put that on the back burner, so I can concentrate on getting the car on the road - - after all, I don't need to roll the windows up and down to drive it!!! When I get a real solution, I will post it

Binding windows can be caused by several problems. Among them is the poor positioning of the channel that grips the bottom of the glass. If it is too far one way or the other, it will pull the glass to the side. Any binding in the regulator, or its arms, should be fixed. and adjusting the regulator in the door will often fix it. If there isn't sufficient room in the mounting holes, it may be necessary to create slots. Also, be sure that the regulator in the offending door is, in fact, the correct type. We have seen regulators from other models installed in the wrong car, probably years ago when junkyards were handy.

Thanks for replies and advice. I think I have covered each of the problems, at least indirectly, and I will continue to "play around" to see if I can make things work better.

Reading a lot of questions and answers and hoping to learn a lot more. Question on the windows ( I have a problem with them rollin up also). When the window is in the down position should the spring be wound or unwound? Thank you

When the window is down, the spring is wound. This is to counterbalance the weight of the window to make rolling it up easier.

Daisy, are you having problems will all of your windows or just one? Look closely at the glass when trying to raise it. Does it come up straight or does one side seem to bind and hold back? Tom
