Trying to find the significance of the VIN or serial number on my 1939 Mercury Town Sedan - it's 17069. I'd like to find out when it was completed and what number production car it was. Any links or help out there?

I am a Ford guy so I can't be much help. Where is that VIN number coming from on the car? Are you reading something on a plate on the body (not the VIN). I would expect a number stamped into the frame near the steering . I would also expect a prefix before the number and stars before and after the number. (but remember I am a Ford guy) Charlie Stephens This message was edited by CharlieStephens on 7-25-17 @ 9:04 PM

The number stamped on the frame and on the transmission is a serial number. VIN numbers came sometime in the 1960's. Here is a link to the serial numbers by year of manufacture for the 1932-1953 Ford and Mercury vehicles. http://vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_serialnumbers.htm Tom
