Hey all! Thanks for letting me join. My dad just picked up this 53 Mercury with the flathead and Mercomatic. It had a "freshening" back in 2001 and there are some questions I have. I restore classic cars for a living, so I tend to be picky about details, but my dad is not. Just trying to figure out what is correct and what isn't. Anyway, just a couple of questions for now. I am going to drop the gas tank and have it cleaned because the car spent more time sitting and has a bunch of junk in the tank. Anyway, I am assuming that the gas tank was painted from the factory. Am I correct? I just thought I would prime and paint it while I have it out. Second question- What color are the wheels supposed to be? Body color? Somebody painted them red and the car is orange. They also hung some side pipes on it that aren't hooked up. Maybe they were going for a "hot rod" look? Third question- are there any kits out there to make the speedometer accurate? Maybe it just needs to be rebuilt? It is way off at all speeds. Anyway, that's it for now. I look forward to hearing from you guys and having some fun with the car!

Welcome to the Forum. Your Dad has a nice car, we hope that he has a lot of fun with it.

The Monterey wheel were red in 1953. I not sure if the tank was painted, if it was, the paint would be gloss black. Mine has undercoating on it.

The original tires were 7.10x15 and were about 27 inches tall. If the tire size is correct, you will have to have the speedometer serviced. They were not as accurate as current speedometers when new.
