Topic: 1940 Ring and Pinion 3.78 ratio

jerandbee    -- 04-02-2017 @ 3:50 PM
I am in need of a ring and pinion gear in 3.78 ratio for my 1940 Mercury - I believe the part number is 99A-4209B - does anyone know where one might be available for purchase?
Many thanks for your help.

The pinion is pressed on the driveshaft on the 1939 and 1940 Mercury. The standard ratio was 3.54:1 and the 3.78:1 ratio was only used in the mountain states. Your best bet for that ratio is to find a rear end from a junk car in CO, WY, MT and ID.

I broke a tooth off of the ring gear on my 40 Merc in 1978 and could not find a NOS Mercury gear set at that time, so I would say that your chances are very slim in finding a NOS Mercury gear set now.

Your other option is to buy a Ford gear set and modify your drive shaft to use the pinion.

Many thanks Tom. You have been most helpful always. I know it won't be an easy find but I guess I need them in order to install the Columbia Overdrive. I'll scatter my needs request far and wide and be patient.

Good luck in your search. I never could justify the expense and labor of installing a Columbia on my 40.

You're so right, Tom - bought a set of original fog lights - didn't need them, put on correct horn relay, horn button, wheel cylinder brake bleeders, etc. etc. = all not needed but it keeps an old guy's brain and hands active. Just hunting for the stuff is great and fun. If I find the gears and get the Columbia I'll be busy for a good bit of time for sure.
Take care and keep up the good help to all V-8ers

Just a word of encouragement, in 2015 I decided to get or build up a Columbia for my 39 Merc. I learned as you have, that a 3.78 was considered best by most folks. I found a nice 3.78 center section with driveshaft on "that auction site". So, they are indeed scarce but are out there.

Appreciate the encouragement - I just found a lead from a wanted ad for an entire rear axle - checking it out now - the hunt is on and the quarry will be found today or sometime in the future for sure.

  Hey Jerandbee,
I love your spirit of the chase, finding these hard to find parts can be part of the "fun".
