I am new to this forum. I just bought a 1940 sedan and the 18 looks like it was never stamped on the frame. The first star is stamped and a space then the other seven numbers and then the last star is stamped.
The guy from the DMV would not do the paper work becouse the the other numbers were not there. Can anyone help me with this?

Was it necessary to have the car inspected? Or, is it possible to simply mail your license / title application by mail? If possible, that is the easiest way to "get er done".
If you must have it inspected, you should attempt to gain sight of the remaining numerals. Typically, cleaning away any grease and built up paint in that area. Do not get too aggressive. In other words, use paint stripper followed by steel wool. The numbers were stamped by hand and as such are often not too deep. Couple that fact with years of possible decay and the numbers are often very faint.
If you remove all of the paint, etc. and still can't read the numbers, correct stamps are available and the numbers can be "freshened" IE re-stamped

It is also stamped on the frame in two other places but you would have to take the body off. Like Kubes said be very careful,, try puting chalk on it and wiping it off.. Mass makes us jump through hoops too.

Shogun, Those other two locations were most often stamped without the prefix anyway.
