On an earlier post someone mentioned that the newest repro by Carpenter has much of the authentic markings..but what does it fit in terms of pulley size? Does it fit the later smaller pulley or do you need the early style (pre June) to make it fit properly?

Seems to me we have a conundrum here.
1940 Fords were NEVER equipped with a 78-8620-B belt. Those were used in 1939 on models equipped with an aluminum valve chamber cover. A "B" belt was 50.1" in length, too short to fit either generator pulley utilized in 1940.
In 1940, the early pulley was 3 11/16" in length and used the 78-8620-A belt. That "A" belt was 51.3" long. When Ford went to the smaller generator pulley of
3 3/16" they also installed a shorter belt. That belt, 78-8620-C was a nominal 50.5" long.

I would suggest you call Carpenter's and ask what length they made the "B" belt. My guess is it is not the "stock" length. This "B" belt should result in a point deduction upon the concourse for those so interested...
Hope this helps.

Drake has just produced a new 40 catalog and in it are fan belts with 78-8620-A @ 50.83 circumference...and 78-8620 "C" with a 50.6 circumference
According to the info "A" fits 37 to early 40 and "C" fits late 40's Drake may have gotten it right with a nice repo...or at least close
