Did any 40 deluxes have buttons at the door jambs to operate the dome light. My 40 has the buttons but the wire on the back has been cut and not hooked up to anything?I thought maybe this was an add on at some point in time!

ALL 1940 Fords had a manually operated dome lamp switch.

That switch should be connected to the rear dome light in a coupe and to two lights on a sedan one on each pillar, if I'm not mistaken? And didn't the coupe switch only have one terminal and the sedan, two?

The switches are identical to all passenger cars having two terminals. The switch itself provides the ground to the body. The two terminals supply power to the lamp when the switch is thrown to the "closed" position.

I believe that the switch just provides power to the light(s) and the ground is provided at the socket, just as it is in all of the other lights on a car.
