Mike can you tell by looking at the photo if this heater unit is for the 39 - 40 Ford Mercury hot air heater. The darker flat area shown in the first photo has the following stamped in Patent Novi Model D ? the D is faint not sure if that is the letter. Thanks for any help you can give. Dave

Dave, Some dimensions would be very helpful. Body length? Diameter of the two "heater" holes? Overall length? Mike

Mike thank you for your response the overall length is 18" the body length is 9 5/8" the larger hole is 2 5/8" ID and the smaller hole is 2" ID. Thanks again Mike

Dave: Your heater unit looks similar to the 1939-40 unit. The NOS units I have measured are 17 1/4" Tip-to-Tip (depends on how you measure), and 9 3/8" diameter of the outer sh*ll. The large recessed area has the same markings except the "D" should be an "E". The adjoining smaller recessed area was not added until an unknown later date (probably in 1939). I have tentatively identified this later heater unit as 91A-18478-A. "Earlier units" 91A-18478 had only the larger recess. These recesses provided clearance between the starter and the heater sh*ll (particularly at the starter terminal). Other identifying features are: "6106" cast into the exhaust inlet end; and blade-type interior heating fins (which yours shows). The earlier units had a 7/8" dia. hole down through the center for the exhaust gases to flow, while the later unit holes were increased to 1" dia. for better heat transfer and to cut down on the exhaust backpressure. According to the information at hand, the 1941 Fords/Mercury hot air units "looked" the same, but carried a different number. I am still trying to find out they differed! Lincoln.

Bob and Mike thank you for all your help, I checked the Letter " D" and it is an " E " I also checked the end of the heater and the numbers 6-06 are cast in the intake end of the unit I cannot make out the second number. When it gets above zero I will check that number closer. Thanks again Dave
