Easiest way? There is only one way...
I'd suggest you lower the top on your car. Disconnect the battery.
You'll need to remove the steering wheel first. Disconnect the pitman arm and remove the bottom two bolts from the steering gear. loosen, but do not yet remove the other two bolts. Next, disconnect the shift linkage near the top of the steering column (rods to the transmission) and remove the left wood floor board. Loosen the clamp at the bottom of the steering column tube, Disconnect the wiring from the ignition switch and remove the two bolts holding the ignition lock to the dash. Unlock the steering wheel and pull the steering column up and off of the worm gear / steering shaft. You will find you'll need to navigate the shift arms through the floor opening. It can be done.
Get the car up so you have clearance from below. Remove the remaining two bolts from the gear.
The gear will come out of the bottom but clearance is very minimal and it will be (possibly) frustrating.

Sounds like lots of fun. Your advice will make the job a lot easier. I know you have done this several times. This will be my first time.

In addition cover your seat/carpets with an old blanket or something similar to prevent grease/dirt from getting on your upholstery. No matter how careful you try to be, that darn grease seems to attach itself to the upholstery.
