is the vin number stamped on a '40 frame in more than one place?

Technically, it's not a VIN, but a serial number initially assigned the engine/transmission assembly, and is stamped on bell housing of the transmission, not on the engine itself.

At the mating of engine to frame, the number is stamped in three places on top of the left left rail: Forward of the dash, visible when the hood is opened, at the high point of the rear axle riser, and midway between the previous two. Only the first location will have the prefix 18.

Alan, You are the ONLY guy other than myself that describes / terms the dash as the "dash". I'm proud of ya!

Don, the visible frame number(engine compartment) on a '40 is generally near the front crossmember.

I have also seen the serial number stamped on the highest part of frame above axle

Boss1940: See Alan's input at the beginning of the thread. All 3 of those numbers were very lightly stamped, and sometimes very difficult to "bring-up" especially if there is substantial surface rust. With the body installed, the only one that is really accessible is the one at the front, and it is often preserved from rust by oil liberated by the engine.

Stroker, I love that twist on oil leaks -
"...oil liberated by the engine".
Very nice!

  Sorry, the rear axle

Mike: Having worked in the aviation community; the term "leak" implies a visible flow of fluid, which of course would ground anything that flies. We used the term "seepage" a lot but a leak
was term to avoid. Seepage tends to "liberate" oil over time, but doesn't generally lead to immediate grounding.
