Topic: Adjusting the play in steering on a 40

Is there a procedure in adjusting the steering play in a 40 steering box? I know how to adjust the steering play in a 50. Also is the steering box the same in a 39 and 40?

Ken, The steering gears '39 - '40 are identical.
The adjustment procedure is quite easy.
I like to have the weight off the front wheels.
Turn the steering wheel in to the center of its travel.
Atop the steering gear you will notice a washer that appears a bit like a star. Remove the nut (cap) above that washer and remove the washer.
Now exposed you will easily notice a slot at the end of the adjustment screw. Turn it in to tighten the gear load. Usually it won't take much, maybe 30° or so.
Replace the washer and nut and check the feel at the steering wheel. If it feels too tight, back off the adjustment a bit.
If the worm & sector are worn out, no amount of adjustment will remedy that issue.

Attached is another procedure, either should work.

Excessive play in the steering wheel is seldom cured by adjusting the steering box. The gear should not need adjustment unless you have rebuilt the box.

Check your tie rod ends, drag link and king pins for play. They are usually the cause of steering problems on the flatheads.
