Mike, I am looking for a new exhaust system and shock links for my 40 std coupe 85hp. Who has the best quality and is closet to looking like original Ford system? Thanks Tom.

Shock links are available from C&G. You can see them in their online catalog at www.cgfordparts.com As for the exhaust system. I use a local muffler shop that custom makes the pipes. Most "in a box" systems seldom fit right, and money spent to have them made and installed by a really good shop is worth it.

If you are looking for simple bolt in and drive off repop pipes, you are in for a tiny bit of disappointment. The front exhaust pipe nearly always needs a little tweak. On occasion, the tail pipe needs tweaking as well. Other than that, you should be good. I have liked the fit of Carpenters pipes the best. If you want an authentic looking muffler, Nacewicz is the best game in town. No one makes shock links that will pass the scrutiny of a respectable judge. However, most of the repop places sell links that will fit and function. Regardless of what their catalogs say, 4" for the front with a sway bar, otherwise 3". Always 3" on the rear. If you want concourse correct, let me know and I will see if I have extras.

All 1940 Ford, either Std. or Dlx. passenger cars, 112", with an 85HP engine came from the factory with a front stabilizer. The only front shock link used for these cars is 48-18055-A. It is a 3" C/L to C/L link. The 4" link, 78-18055-A was used on the front of 1940, 60HP, 112", passenger and commercial vehicles. These 60HP vehicles did not have the front stabilizer.

I agree with Mike, 4" shock links on the front. The 3" links will have the shock arm interfering with the stabilizer swivels and not allow the shock to do their job. Tom

With all due respect 40coupe... all 85 and 95HP equipped '40 Fords did NOT get a sway bar. Only DeLuxe models were equipped with a sway bar as "standard equipment". On the Ford V8 models, the sway bar was an extra cost item regardless of engine installed. Sway bars were available on 60HP cars as well. If the 60 HP was installed in a DeLuxe model, the sway bar was "standard equipment". On a V8 model, with a 60hp, the sway bar was optional. Cars equipped with a sway bar got the 4" links or there were definite interference issues. Cars w/o the bar got 3" links.

I make mistakes and will admit to same when proven. Although I try my best, I make them. I will for the time being stand my ground on this one... sway bars on ALL DeLuxe models and optional on all V8 models. I have had too many very low mileage 40 Fords (V8 models) w/o sway bars. I also had one 60HP V8 model with 21,000 miles... It did have a sway bar. I will allow the possibility exists that a dealer installed the aforementioned bar. I'd think unlikely but possible. However, to remove sway bars from V8 models along with swapping the perch pins... unlikely.
