I need to replace the top bearing in my '40 ford standard coupe steering column because of slop in it. Any suggestions as to best way to replace it? The instructions that came with bearing are very vague. Thank you

Bearing? Are you installing an actual bearing? If so, you no doubt realize that authentically there was simply a rubber bushing in the column.
The bearing modification is popular and well worth the effort if you drive your car.

Obviously you have to remove the steering wheel and horn bottom first.
The old rubber bushing should be fairly near the top of the column. You'll need to dig that out of there.
I have had the best results drilling a number of small holes straight through the bushing as a way to "relieve" it. Then I fish a piece of coat hanger wire though one of the holes. The wire has a small "hook" on the end.
Once that bushing is removed, simply install the bearing. If you bought one of those with the roller bearing, be 100% certain the outer sleeve is .001" - .002" smaller in diameter than your columns I.D.
Often times the column is smaller than the bearing "sleeve" and attempting to install it over size will cause interference problems.
