...what else is new? Ha How can I tell if my 40 Ford is a 77-A or a 77-B. The explanation I have read only leaves me confused . In the book 90 Years of Ford both models are shown but I can't figure out the difference. And how can I tell the difference in engine size? Is there a number located somewhere that indicates the model and engine size? Can someone enlighten me?

Is your car all apart? Visually, there is quite a bit of difference between a "standard" or V8 77A and a Deluxe 77B. If you are dealing with a bare body, and a pile of parts, if it is complete you can still tell by looking at the dash, gauges, hood, grille, color of knobs and probably many other things Kube can identify. I think in general, the A suffix is associated with "standard" or V8 parts and the B denotes Deluxe. What descriptions are confusing to you?

My car is completely finished and that is how I got it BUT it is not a Deluxe and the 77-A is a Standard as well as Type 77-B is a Standard. I think I have a 77-B but what is the difference between the two and how can I tell Refer to pages 218 and 220 in "90 Years of Ford". I have not been able to figure it out, that's why I am here.

Ive not seen the book you refrence. The 1940 Ford and Mercury Body Parts List published by the Ford Motor Company in July 1940 lists 77A as "Standard Coupe -5-window (112" wheelbase)" and 77B as "Deluxe Coupe 5-window (112" wheelbase)" I suspect there is a misprint somewhere, I guess it could be in the factory Ford publication. Maybe Mike Kubarth can chime in here.

mgbrewer, Deuce has advised you well. The book you are referring to is fraught with misinformation, certain to add confusion to many relying upon this source for their research. I have added a picture of the deluxe front end on this post and will add a similar picture (within a post to follow) of the Ford V8, aka: "standard". Okay, I managed to find a photo with both a Ford V8 and deluxe. Here it is... The 1940 Ford V8 is to the right, the 1940 DeLuxe to the far left. Between them is a 39 Standard.

From the photos you provided I believe my car is a 40 Ford V8 on the right. I can't see the angle of the grill very well but it appears to be the same and the painted (non-chrome) headlight rims are the same. I assume this car is also referred to as "Standard?" I would really appreciate it if you could send a photo of the correct dash. I have all of the photos from when the car was found before restoration and I "think" it is the correct dash and components. Now how can I tell the engine size? Thanks for all your assistance. - Mike

Attached is a photo of the dash area within a 1940 Ford V8 (aka: "standard"). Note the black mat is incorrect. If you have a Ford V8 COUPE model, then yes, it is a 01A-77-A. Count the number of head studs on one side of the engine. If it is 24 (most likely) it is the larger 85 hp engine, if it has 17 it is the smaller V8 60. In the US Ford used the little 60 from 37-40 but abandoned it due to lack of power and poor sales.
